The city of London is a vast metropolis, offering a different experience around every corner. It portrays the classic example of a traditional British life combined with the hustle and bustle of the big city, a mix adored by around 30 million people that visit the city every year. The British capital has some incredible sights, some famous while others sit relatively dormant, acting as the furniture of the city skyline. Here are just a few sights you won’t want to miss on your trip to the big city.
Houses of parliament
The laws that govern the British life have been debated and enacted here since around 1840. This Houses of Parliament sits on the banks of the Thames and is certainly one of London’s most iconic buildings. The building is flanked by Big Ben, the largest four faced chiming clock in the world. The clock is over 96 metres tall and is still complete with a 13-ton bell, ringing out across the city every 15 minutes.
Buckingham Palace
This spectacular palace is the official home of her Majesty the Queen and her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh. It is the largest private house in the city, boasting over 660 rooms. It is also the place to catch the changing of the guard, a lavish ceremony where her Majesty’s personal guards offer over the services to a new sentry.
London eye
While the first two mentioned are steeped in history, the London Eye planned to make some for it self. When it opened back in 1999, it was the tallest ferris wheel in the world, standing at over 440ft. the ferris wheel is fitted with 32 sealed and air conditioned capsules, each taking 25 people up in the sky to give an incredible view of the city. Each revolution takes around 30 minutes, giving you plenty of time to get some great pictures of the great London skyline.
Tower of London
Tucked away down on the banks of the Thames, the Tower of London stands as one of London’s oldest and most popular landmarks. Founded towards the end of 1066, it was built by William of Orange as part of the Norman Conquest of England. It has played a significant part in the history of Britain, acting as a prison, holding disgraced Queen-to-be Elizabeth and Guy Fawkes after the failed gunpowder plot back in 1605.
So there are must four unmissable landmarks on your visit to London, but this guide hardly scratches the surface. People usually look for a lengthy trip in the city in order to really explore all the landmarks. Staying in one of the many holiday apartments in London could just be the perfect way to do that.
