Clear Eyesight is Crucial for Success in School   by Thomas Vielma

About 2 out of every 10 children of school age have difficulty reading. While some of these cases are a result of dyslexia or other learning disabilities, a good percentage of children with reading problems have no learning disability at all. In fact, for many, a vision impairment is what is interfering with their ability to read.

Vision is a crucial component in the reading process. First of all, children need to have clear eyesight or visual acuity to be able to see clearly from far away. Most vision screenings performed through the school are designed to look for distance impairment using the familiar 20/20 eye chart. Unfortunately, this is all school vision screenings are able to catch and there are other elements of eyesight that need to be examined to ensure vision is adequate.

To perform optimally in school, additional visual skills are necessary. To see and read properly children must be able to synchronize their eye movements, stay on a sentence of print without getting lost, maintain focus while reading and quickly shift focus. Students also need to be able to interpret and correctly process the stimuli presented to them. An inadequacy in any of these visual abilities often results in great problems with school, especially in language and comprehension.

Clearly kids with visual impairments sometimes suffer unnecessarily when their eyesight can quickly be corrected. Too often parents and teachers fail to make the connection between learning difficulties and vision.

Some of the specific vision abilities needed for learning include:

Tracking: a child’s ability to track along a row of print. Children experiencing difficulties with tracking often get lost in text, skip words and have trouble comprehending what they read.

Eye teaming: the eyes’ ability to simultaneously aim at one image reporting a unified, clear picture to the optic nerve. Approximately 1 out of 10 of young children suffer from eye teaming deficiencies which can result in double vision, blurry sight and Eye Strain. Eye teaming problems can be treated by a qualified optometrist.

Visual Perception : a category of developmental abilities that rely on the capability to give meaning to and decipher what is seen. These include visual discrimination and spatial capabilities that are essential for distinguishing letters and words, spelling and spatial processing skills.
